The Natural Vertigo Remedies

If you have vertigo, the treatment you may receive will depend on what’s causing it.  Some people experience very mild vertigo, where the sensation of dizziness is hardly noticeable. Others may have much more severe vertigo that affects their ability to do everyday tasks. It can last for anything from a few seconds to several days, and can develop suddenly.

Avoiding stressful situations can help, as according to the NHS anxiety can make the symptoms of vertigo worse. During an attack, it can help to lie still in a quiet, darkened room, as this may relieve the sensation of spinning. There are natural vertigo remedies that you can do, including the following:

Drink less alcohol

Cutting down on alcohol may also help, as some experts believe dizziness may be triggered by changes in the body’s fluid balance. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it increases urination and can lead to dehydration.

Perform some maneuvers

Epley maneuver

The Epley maneuver, in combination with medicines, is used to treat posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and also prevents its recurrence.  The Epley maneuver was comparatively found to be more efficient in alleviating vertigo than sham maneuver and did not have any severe adverse effects.

Half somersault maneuver

The half somersault maneuver is an alternative to the Epley maneuver and is more comparatively more effective for some individuals. However, a higher number of half somersaults are needed for relief from BPPV.

Brandt-Daroff exercise

The Brandt-Daroff exercise is highly efficient for vertigo caused by labyrinthitis or BPPV, especially for those who are sensitive to repositioning maneuvers or who have had no positive effect with the other maneuvers. These exercises have no adverse repercussions and, therefore, can be performed until results are obtained.

Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo biloba extracts can also be used for relieving the symptoms of vertigo or dizziness. Ginkgo biloba is widely used in eastern medicine due to its antioxidant properties. It may also help increase blood flow to the brain, thereby improving cognitive function.

Almonds

Almonds are packed with vitamins B and E, apparently making them highly effective in vertigo treatment.

Ginger tea

Ginger is renowned for its medicinal properties, which may prove useful in alleviating vertigo symptoms as well. It can do so by improving the blood circulation in your body and relieving nausea. However, further studies are needed to confirm these claims.

Get plenty of sleep

Tiredness can make vertigo worse in some cases, so don’t try to burn the candle at both ends – aim for seven to eight hours of sleep a night.  It’s important to consider your safety if you have vertigo.

Cut down on caffeine

Found mostly in coffee, tea, caffeinated fizzy drinks and chocolate, this is also thought by some to affect the body’s fluid balance. Caffeine is also a stimulant that can affect the nerves in the inner ear.

Stress management

Anxiety and stress are common triggers in many conditions, and this can be true for vertigo. Learning how to cope with stress can go along way in keeping vertigo at bay. Do not turn to bad habits such as drinking alcohol or smoking to manage your stress as both can lead to more vertigo.

Drinking more water

Vertigo can be a sign of dehydration, so drink more water. Track your water intake for a week to encourage yourself to drink more. Also, consider cutting back on soft drinks, coffee, and tea, as they can dehydrate you.

Regular Exercise

Another potential cause of vertigo is blood flow problems. Therefore, doing cardio exercises every day can help ensure the proper circulation of blood in your body. However, when your vertigo is due to a cardiovascular issue, don’t overdo it. Consult a doctor to confirm which exercises are bad or good for you. If you’re not allowed to do anything strenuous, you can usually still do stretching.

Discuss with your doctor the best medication for your vertigo. The best medication will depend on your medical condition, medical history, and medications you are currently taking that may interact with vertigo medication as well as your response to the treatment.
